Chronic Dry Eye: What is it and how is it treated

What is Chronic Dry Eye?

Chronic dry eye is a fairly common condition and occurs when there is a lack of moisture or lubrication on the surface of the eye. A lack of moisture can cause irritation and dryness of the eye.

What causes dry eye?

There are a number of factors that can be responsible for dry eye. One cause of dry eyes is decreased tear production which can be caused by ageing, certain medical conditions, some medications, corneal nerve sensitivity or cataract surgery. In modern times, quite commonly it is observed that extended periods of time spent in front of a screen is responsible for the condition. This is due to the lowered blinking frequency when staring at a screen.

What are the symptoms of dry eye?

Symptoms may include:

  • a gritty sensation

  • feeling like something is in your eye

  • red or itchy eyes

  • a burning sensation

  • pain

  • light sensitivity

  • fluctuating vision

  • excessive watering/tearing

Experiencing dry eyes can be a serious problem. It can inhibit your ability to perform daily tasks

Treatment of dry eyes:

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, we recommend that you see a medical professional immediately. Treatment usually involves an assessment, and then a prescription (if necessary) of lubricants, drops or ointments to restore moisture to the eyes.

Dry eyes can seriously affect your vision if left untreated.
